Well, That’s A First…

What a day!  Anytime you have full sun and 60* in January and you can hit the open road with your cycling buddies… it deserves a… “What a day!”

It was actually the first time I’ve been out on the open road here in NC in a while. The schedule’s been so busy and the AM temps in the teens… so my time has been spent on the trainer in the man cave.  Time well spent though because the new CTS Climbing DVD’s I got from a cycling buddy (Thanks again Pedalman) have really increased my power.

I know I’ve mentioned this before but if you do it right and consistently… you really can ride out of your garage and lay it down. So… as for the “First”… I was waiting for my cycling buddies from the NC State Cycling Team to show up and I took a few laps around the wormblock to test my gears and make sure I could still steer after so many rides on the trainer.  After picking up some speed, I felt a big wet splat on my right calf.  First, I thought something dripped on it and then I looked.
Oh man, did a bird just drop a bomb on me?  Then I look closer and realized the brown sludge on my leg was slithering a bit.
I apparently rolled right over a very juicy worm that splatted so much it plastered onto my calf.
I’ve had a lot of things hit me on rides… bugs in my mouth… bees and dragon flies into my face and helmet… I’ve even been dive bombed by a few birds.  I’ve never ended up with worm guts on the back of my leg.
I’m sorry little worm… I never even saw you on the road.
I guess those new “Speedy” Socks from Twin Six really had me ready to ride.  P.S. – They even helped this 40 year old win the county sign sprint.

I’ve heard that having a worm hit you is good luck in some areas of the world. Nice work taking 1st place in the county sign sprint, especially in the off season. I’m getting some of those socks!

Nice story. I thought that there were blood-sucking leeches jumping on cyclists in the Tarheel State but it seems that it is pretty safe there after all. I would not suggest replacing your Hammer Gel with these, though.

Pedalman–Yes, it is good luck… like being hit by bird droppings. I think I prefer a squished worm over the bird poo. Yes, you must get some of those fast socks!

SPROCKETBOY– Yeah… we got rid of the blood-sucking leeches a couple hundred years ago. I don’t think I would trade my gels for something like worm nutrition. It might be a bit harder to wash down judging by how hard it was to wipe off my leg. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
