Spoke Protector Disc… Do You Still Have Yours?

So, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, apparently all of our road bikes fail to meet the federal safety standard for bicycles.  Well, at least I’m guessing you don’t still have a “spoke protector disc” on your rear wheel.  If so, then it’s like some of the latest Cannondale models and according to the CPSC it poses a hazard.

I guess that’s the job of the CPSC and because Cannondale is an American Company (but I believe the bikes were made in Taiwan) they still fall under these guidelines.  But I don’t think other brands of (high end) road bikes come with a “Spoke Protector Disc” installed.  Am I wrong about this?   Here’s a pic zoomed in on the rear wheel of a road bike for sale on another big cycling company’s website.  I don’t see a “spoke protector disc”.

Here’s the full recall on the 2009 Cannondale Models.

What do you all think about this?

hmmmm, I don’t see one either.

It’s ridiculous! Check out Joe Lindsay’s Boulder Report at Bicycling.com for a great read on the topic.

What a bunch of crap! I would think our government would have better things to do…

LAUREL– Yeah… again this is so odd.

UNCADAN8– It is so crazy… thanks for the report link.
I’ll check it out.

CHRIS– Yes, I would love a follow up from the CPSC on why they release something like this now. Do they realize if they saw almost every bike in every bike shop in America… they would have to be recalled?

otherwise known as a pie plate and hell no i don’t have one. fixed gear culture makes fun of them.

If the government had any idea about what it made laws concerning, they would realize that “dork discs” are the joke of the bike industry.

I think pie plates were last seen on my 1974 Gitane–for a moment anyway, because I took it off as soon as I could. Cannondale frames are made in Bedford, PA and you can see how it’s done here: http://www.reporterfreelance.info/en/2009/02/15/cannondale-made-in-usa/

I think that some of their frames are now made in China but the plant in the USA is definitely still operating. So it is an American company. Owned by Canadians.

I hear they make you go like 2mph faster…………..but only if they are white.

My Cannondale CAAD9 came with one. When I changed to a Shimao wheelset I didn’t have one put on, well I didn’t ask and neither did the shop. Aesthetically I like it without.
