Preparing for the “Across The Pond, Chicken vs. Duck Egg, Cyclosportive Challenge”

You may have read my posts at the beginning of the week about the “Fresh Organic Eggs” Stand I pass on one of my routes.  Well, I had mentioned it would be a good challenge for me to sometime try to make it home with a dozen… UNCRACKED!

ENTER:
The worldwide web, another cycling enthusiast and the fact that there are plenty more farms around the world looking to sell their eggs on the side of the road.

It just so happens that a new cycling blogger buddy in England, “Easy Tom,” rides past a farm that offers up eggs for sale as well.  OK… the ones there are ducks eggs but my research staff Googled this and it seems they’re about the same size as chicken eggs.  Anyway, Tom read my post and offered up a friendly challenge.  Since we’ve talked a few times, the title of this challenge has evolved into the…  “Across The Pond, Chicken vs. Duck Egg, Cyclosportive Challenge.”

We’ve discussed some rules…  including documenting the process…. pictures or video will be fine I’m sure.  We are not allowed to use panniers, baskets or bags in the transportation of said eggs.  We will then see if we’ve made it home (we both have just under 10 miles to ride) with the least number of eggs cracked out of the dozen.  But I also suggested to Easy Tom that we involve you guys, our fellow cycling bloggers, and have you judge us on our efforts, creativity and end result.

So, please share your thoughts.  Let’s shell this thing out… Crack open a fun competition…  Scramble it up a little!

Well, let’s get this egg on a roll!

Oy, now you’ve got me doing it! I can’t wait to see the results. If you’ve got a cutout in your saddle, you could try stashing one there, hehe.

I don’t have a route that has fresh eggs but I wish I did. We go thru more than 3 dozen a week!

UNCADAN8– I know it’s so egg-citing… I’m poached up … I mean choked up! I’ve been thinking about spots on my bike I could secure an egg… that’s a tough one. We have agreed Duct tape is allowed. So that cracks open some more omelettes… I mean options.

JUDI– 3 dozen? Damn… you need to be a poster couple for the National Egg Council… Here’s the ad:
” Meet Dom and Judi… Eatin’ Eggs and Kickin’ Ass!”

You guys are just so full of good ideas. I’ve got strawberry and avocado stalls along one of my routes. Do I qualify? It’s a big pond inbetween us, too. :-)

Can’t wait to read everything about it and judge the documentation. Will also drop over to Tom’s and say hello.

GROOVER– We could put together a really delicious cornucopia of goodies. Just think of what we can all find in our corners of the world on our bikes. I love that you are game… but I think you’ll need to search out some eggs… you know the same “fragility factor.” Then, maybe we can create another competition for variety in maybe something like… “The Challenge of Pedaling for Produce.” My wife, Jan, is jealous though. She’s wishing I could ride past an avocado stand!

In the front of your jersey is the way to go. Just stick the carton in there and pedal easy.

CHRIS– Good Point… thanks for the tip! Seems like you may have done something like this before…

Ah - tips are being shared eh! Well I have my own developments and very advanced techniques for the transport of fragile cargo - I am glueing an egg cup to my stem as we speak!

The only thing I am worried about is my duck egg supply source, however, if the worst happens and they are eggless I am not going to ‘duck out’ but have a backup plan of a nearby chicken farm so I may end up having to chicken-in rather than chicken-out should the situation arise…

EasyTom– Nice… I’m conjuring up something as well. Good to hear you have other egg options. Looking forward to the fun.

Sounds like fun…just don’t put all your eggs in one basket!

Hi Jen– Thanks for the wise advice. :) But no baskets aloud on this one. I’m not sure where I’ll put them.
Cheers!

I’m thinking that you could probably put a few along the hemline of your shorts. It’d be secure and would look hilarious!

[...] my last post, you saw my first attempt at the “Across The Pond, Chicken vs. Duck Egg, Cyclosportive Challenge.”  I look at it as an unsuccesful attempt rather than a failed attempt because the eggs I was [...]
